CES, Press Passes and Why MrGaryLee and MsDanielle learned a lesson.
Written by The Kid on January 9, 2008So i’m here in Vegas again this time is for CES if you don’t know what CES is, it’s North America’s largest consumer electronics show. They are expecting over 140,000 people to attend this show from all over the world. There is over 1.8 millions sq ft of exhibitions. Just to give you an idea of size Blog World was about 100,000 sq feet not even a blip on CES, Blog World according to my estimates had a maximum of 2000 people.
The power of press, i was lucky enough to meet John Chow early in my conference shows, he explained to me the power of press, in Vancouver we attended a few conferences as press and i realized it’s the only way to attend a conference. Why? because press rules, companies don’t want to piss you off so they are polite to you and give you free stuff. Also the people who are hosting the conference need press there so the exhibitors can show off there product/service to people who may have not attended via blogs, podcasts or main stream media.
At Blogworld i was asked a question from Gary Lee, What pass did i buy? i said hmm? what do you mean? I’m press i didn’t pay to come here. He said WTF? Then he said how did i get it? I told him John Chow, John has been attending conferences for a lot longer than i have and he has learned all the tricks of the trade (This is why a network is so important, read here if you haven’t yet). At that point Gary and Danielle realized hmmm we like free stuff, we don’t want to have to pay to go to these conferences, lets become press. That is what they have done so what does that mean? Well that means at Affiliate Summit West there will be more money to be spent on liquor yaaa! It also means that they will be able to attend more conferences. The more you learn the more you earn. If you work at a dead end job that you have mastered years ago, i have a news tip for you….. you wont be getting any significant raise anytime soon.
