Fucking with Alexa

Written by The Kid on September 20, 2007

So i promised on the show that i would share a few “tricks” to use with the Alexa search tool.

So lets get to it!

How does the toolbar work?

The traffic rank is based on three months of aggregated historical traffic data from millions of Alexa Toolbar users and is a combined measure of page views and users (reach). As a first step, Alexa computes the reach and number of page views for all sites on the Web on a daily basis.

So there are 2 methods to “help” your site achieve these rankings.

Method 1 - Page View Exploit
Step 1) Install the alexa toolbar

This one is for firefox

This is for Internet Explorer

Step 2) Visit your site with many tabs open =)

Open about 6 tabs

Step 3) Automate

Download a macro program that preforms actions that you can program

For windows users i recommend AutoHotkey it’s free and easy enough to use.

For mac users, just use automator or what i recommend for all firefox users which should be everyone! grrrrrr IE

use this extension set this extension to the time you want to auto refresh the page i would recommend about every 2mins and watch your alexa page rank skyrocket!

Method 2 - Page view and Reach Exploit

This method is almost the same as method 1 but requires a little more know how.

With this method you need to install the firefox proxy plugin.

What a proxy does is reroutes a ip address, so lets think of it as masking your cell phone number, ie your phone number is 212-987-5654 (new york) and you use the proxy to pretend your number is 206-234-5543 (seattle).

So this makes alexa think that these webpage requests are coming from different places.

Step 1) Get a list of proxies here

Step 2) Load them into foxyproxy if you don’t know how follow this link to learn. (make sure you setup about 10 different ip’s so you can just click on them and switch easily)

Step 3) Automate - you need to use a macroprogram here, again automator for mac, load your 6 or so tabs and let them refresh a few times from your ip address then use foxproxy and click on a new proxy and then let it autorefresh and so on and so on.

Step 4) Set it and Forget It - Do this every night before you sleep or do it on a old machine and watch your alexa score sky rocket.

Why do it?

A program like Review Me uses these type of stats to determine you overall rate that you can charge for a “review” of another site or product.

Also gives your site more exposure, so there are many other programs out there that use Alexa and until they fix this issue, you might as well exploit it.

Stay tuned for the next post, Making Mad Money with BlogRush

you’re gonna make some pr0n seekers disappointed out there hahah, big cock in the name and now fucking :P

best thing is if you have several computers, to have one of them as the alexa booster machine for like 2 h a day.

Might be a good idea to turn off the various types of ads you might have on a site before doing this though ;). Otherwise you might end up getting banned by some of the more strict networks ;)

What about your cookie? If you visit that site the first time and visit it again, won’t Alexa know it is you by the cookie on your computer?

I don’t think it can be very beneficial or really work as well as you describe…

    Take care,
    Sean

Great question WarriorBlog cookies can be used to track you if you want to altogether avoid cookies when messing with alexa then i would reccomend Cookie safe extension for firefox https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2497

This will keep those bastards out of your computer.

One thing you must rememeber about Alexa is it’s a crappy method to measure traffic since most “smart” surfers would never install it, but again Alexa is used to measure things like review me so would you rather have a high Alexa score or a low one? Make more money per review or less?

I think it’s an easy choice!
